Members Of The Jamaican Society for The Blind (JSB) Joining Remote Working World
Internet Income Jamaica (IIJ) was pleased to be able to assist the Jamaica Society for the Blind to learn more about online earning opportunities. Members of the visually impaired in Jamaica sometimes get overlooked because many feel they are unable to work, lacking in skills, or will not be proficient. We decided to do a training exercise from February 17-20, 2021. This will equip the community for the changing world of remote work, expanded by the pandemic.
At IIJ, we teach people daily how to use skills they already possess or upskill for different ways to earn an income online. Members of the JSB were glad for the support and voiced how successful they believe they could be in remote working.
How The Visually Impaired in Jamaica Work
“They really learned a lot!” exclaimed IIJ trainer, Dwight Wilson. He was the main facilitator each day of the sessions. Wilson initially started by accessing each person’s capabilities with a test about Fiverr, one of the online freelancing sites we teach people how to use.
In case you wondered how a visually impaired person can do computer tasks, know that they use uniquely designed software to assist. Additionally, a vocal aid may be required along with accessibility settings which are on every modern computer’s operating system.
After they set up their Fiverr accounts, Wilson decided he was going to use the tasks of Transcription, Phone Calling and Voice Overs, as teaching points for the JSB members. Thankfully so, because with their capabilities, they are excellent listeners and can speak well. Additionally, some members have not totally lost their sight.
JSB Members Ready To Face The Challenges Of Virtual Work
“All the days were eventful and they really, really appreciated all the help that Internet Income Jamaica gave them, and [we] showed them ways that they can legitimately earn using their skills. Many of them have great voices and they are anticipating their voice-over and phone call services,” said Wilson.
Some people, being not totally blind, happily assisted Wilson throughout the exercises. In fact, volunteers and supervisors from JSB were present to make the training even more enjoyable.
“The transcription is a bit challenging for some of them but most are able to handle,” commented Wilson.
The world has been changing in terms of how we work daily. IIJ is proud to be able to assist in converting different members of our Jamaican and Caribbean community to this worldwide shift.
